Requirement Breakdown

  • Requirement effective July 1, 2016
  • Schools must provide students grades 9-12 with a one-time CPR instruction
  • Course time must be at least 30 minutes in length
  • Training must include a psychomotor component
  • Full certification for students is encouraged, but not required

Excerpts from Bill

After July 1, 2016, the state boards shall require to be taught in all of the public schools of this state once during grades nine through twelve as a requirement for graduation at least thirty minutes of instruction on the subject of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which must include a psycho-motor skills component. However, full certification is encouraged. 

Instruction may be given by community members such as emergency medical technicians, paramedics, police officers, firefighters and representatives of the American Heart Association of the American Red Cross. These community members are encouraged to provide necessary training and instructional resources such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation kits and other material at no cost to the schools.”
